The situation

A factory needs a continuous environmental record across the plant and its perimeter — gas concentrations, weather, air quality — to satisfy a regulator or a corporate social-responsibility programme. The monitoring points are many and spread out, indoors and outdoors. Wiring each one is impractical, and the facilities team often wants the record to be independent of the plant's production IT network.
